Overall avast! Free Anti-Virus shows promise but it's not quite ready for prime time. Comodo seems a better choice, at least for the time being. I use Avast on the Windows side, because on Windows it's definitely the best antivirus available. I had been using Sophos on the Mac, but Avast on Windows had more features, so after Avast released a Mac version, I decided to try it out. The Mac version definitely had more features. In terms of sheer number of features, Avast definitely wins.
But there were a few major issues: First, I use SSL for email, and Avast would complain about not being able to check my email. I shouldn't have to choose between securely accessing my email and having antivirus running on my Mac.
Second, scanning took a really really really really long time. After installing Avast, I ran a full scan on my computer, and it ran for over 36 hours without being anywhere near finished, so I stopped it. Third, when Avast was installed, my web browser was slowed down pretty drastically. Sites that would normally load very quickly would sometimes take between ten seconds and a minute to load. I'd be willing to accept a very slight delay, but that's too significant.
For Windows, there's no question that I'd recommend Avast. Avast makes good Windows software. Version 7. It has a lot of good features, but the few major issues I listed are enough that I can't recommend using Avast on the Mac when Sophos works very well and almost silently and doesn't slow down my computer.
Cgc May 4 Avast is great on Windows but on my Mac it was so obtrusive, asking me for every connection disabled due to Little Snitch and warning me my mail was encrypted which I couldn't find a work around.
In the end I uninstalled Avast after one day of non-stop nuisance pop-ups. They need to make it work more seamlessly and less obtrusively e. Anthony Apr 27 I just downloaded Avast about 30 minutes ago — and it created one of the most awful experiences I've had on my iMac.
I installed it — and its components — and it took over my machine with dozens of items spread everywhere. I played hell trying to delete the entire mess, which I finally did. I did not like that it took over my machine, so to speak.
No wonder it tells you that it will not function if you have any other anti-virus software installed. Be warned — this can cause serious problems. Harry Flashman Apr 5 I've used the Windows version for some time without problems including an install via Parallels on this Mac, so I was curious to try this out on OS X. To my surprise it turned my 8 Core Mac Pro with 32 gigs of Ram into a horribly slow, unresponsive mess with frequent spinning ball and that doesn't happen even when I'm running several resource hungry apps like Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time on heavy tasks.
I looked inside the activity monitor for clues but couldn't see anything obviously wrong, yet it was patently clear from the sudden slow down while Avast was running a scan that something was wrong, so I uninstalled it and normal service resumed.
I've not seen problems like this in the past when trying Sophos or Clamav. Bushwhack Apr 4 I switched to this from Sophos and I am looking forward to some of the added features.
However I am having an issue installing the Chrome Extension with the latest beta of this software. Is this a known issue or am I the only one? Not trying to advocate antivirus programs on the Mac but if you're the paranoid type then this is the best option for you. It's light on system resources and is very accurate at detecting malware. I can't give it 5 stars as it's still in beta but that can change in the future.
Timmyb Mar 29 Is this going to be free once it is out of beta? Hal Mar 28 Works good so far. Only nuisance is setting up the mail server proxy to intercept mail traffic.
If you don't switch off SSL, you'll end up with numerous on screen warnings. Hope this has been worked around in the final version. Cattus-Thraex Jun 4 I tried the mac version soem years ago, and got a serious problem: it harmed my mac no idea whether it found something, but I had to reinstall, fortunately could do that.
The authors admitted the problem, but—nothing followed. Its authors cultivate a kind of arrogance, perhaps considering that a good feedback is something normal. I cannot judge this version, but I warn potential users on the possible problems with avast. Maybe I am wrong, and maybe I misjudged their reaction. So, before tsting avast! Gregm Jun 3 Avast has an outstanding free version for Windows. GeogProf Jun 3 Seriously, I wouldn't touch this app with a ten foot pole.
Ninja-Boy Jul 28 Quite an impressive product description by the company. However, I also found problems with e-mail. I have to use Windoze at work and test-ran this app for a while when I was looking for a reliable AV app. Even on Windoze, it causes conflicts with e-mail and certain other apps which it blocks from launching.
In spite of this, it's a good-looking app - nice GUI - but a shame the product description doesn't live up to it's actual performance. And, it was a pain to uninstall! Yesuaini99 Mar 10 Also, find it impossible to find any documentation on how to uninstall it.
Pirx Sep 21 For Mac, I was looking for an AV that scans the single biggest source of infection: e-mails. I do forward e-mails, so passing on Windows infections is a possibility.
Avast plugs into your Mail. If you uncheck the mail option in the preferences, no mail scanning seems to be happening. Apart from my preference to launch my e-mail software at my leisure, Avast completely ignores the fact that many people do not use Mail.
So, in terms of what I really wanted to have, e-mail scanning, it does not perform as expected. The HD scans are fast and thorough, no complaints about that. No crashes or hanging on OS X Altero-Tot-Eu Feb 18 Do not install it! While it's got an easy to use UI and seems to be quite thorough I ran it but no "cooties" were found on my hard drive , be aware that Avast Antivirus is not for purchase; you buy a license to use it for one, two or three years at a time.
The Avast company is Czech, and heretofore has sold most of their software to European buyers, so most likely, their antivirus software licenses will become more and more costly for those of us in the States as the dollar vis a vis the Euro loses value.
